Asustek to Make Google Android Netbook

Google’s Android OS continues to extend its tentacles deeper into Microsoft territory. Two weeks ago Archos announced plans to roll out an Android-based tablet phone later this year, and now netbook-pioneer Asustek says it may install Android on an upcoming, low-cost notebook.

According to a Bloomberg report, Samson Hu, who manages Asustek’s successful Asus Eee PC business, says his company has engineers working on an Android-based portable, which may ship by the end of the year. Read the rest of this entry »

 Microsoft Readies Vista Update

Microsoft has released an almost final version of Vista Service Pack 2 to its testing community.

The release candidate of Vista SP2 is not yet publicly available, but judging by past releases you may not have to wait too long before the official update ships.

The timeline so far

Microsoft released the beta version of SP2 to its testing community in late October, and made SP2 beta publicly available in early December. Then the update seemed to suffer some setbacks when, in late January, reports surfaced that Microsoft wouldn’t be coming out with a release candidate of SP2 until at least March. LG made a major commitment to producing Windows Phones on Monday, unveiling a new, 3D interface for its high-end phones at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2009) show in Barcelona.

BARCELONA—LG made a major commitment to producing Windows Phones on Monday, unveiling a new, 3D interface for its high-end phones at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2009) show in Barcelona. The LG-Microsoft alliance was highlighted by LG Mobile’s chief executive, Dr. Skott Ahn, using LG’s watch-phone to conduct a live video call with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. The two companies have committed to release at least 10 LG Windows phones in 2009 and as many as 26 in 2012.
